Summer is a busy time for music in Newport, with the highlights being Folk Fest the last weekend in July and Jazz Fest the first weekend in August.  But what about the few days in between these two giant music festivals? Well that is what BridgeFest is for: to “bridge the gap” between these two festivals in order to keep the music going for ten full days. It starts on July 27th and goes through July 30th with over 50 artists at more than nine venues.

BridgeFest was created by the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County in order to give visitors a reason to stay and locals a reason to get out and enjoy some local music.  They work with the Newport Festival Foundations to support the local music scene in Newport.  BridgeFest hosts all types of musicians, aspiring music students, emerging artists, galleries, wineries, farms and restaurants.  This is the 7th year of the festival.

Some of this years festival locations include: Queen Anne Square, Jimmy’s Saloon, Bowen’s Wharf, Trinity Church, St. Matthews in Jamestown, and the Redwood Library.  There will be an opening night Soiree held on the 27th to kick things off.  It goes from 6pm to 8pm at  the Sanford-Covell Marina on Washington Street.  ZanRicky will be playing and the Rhode Islands Ballet Theater will be putting on a dance performance.  This event will also feature a silent auction, a raffle, wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres.

To check out whose playing and when, click here.  Keep the music going and support your local musicians!

When it comes to vacations and travel, food plays a major roll for many people.  Food tours are becoming more and more popular as they give visitors a feel for the cuisine of the area.  Newport is new to the food tour game, with two new companies ready to give you good eats.  Both Newport Food Tours and Rhode Island Red Food Tours give visitors a taste of a variety of dishes from great local restaurants.

Newport Food Tours runs tours Tuesday through Saturday at 5pm.  Tours are approximately 2 hours long and start outside Norey’s on Broadway.  Food tour guests will visit restaurants in the Broadway area that serve up high quality American cuisine, many of which are farm-to-table restaurants.  Beer and wine tastings are also included at some of the stops.  Not only will you be tasting great food, but you’ll get to hear about all the details about the food and the chefs who prepare it.  After the last stop, there will be no need for dinner.

The Rhode Island Red Food Tour is a three hour, combined walking and food tour, that mixes local history with great food.  Guests with Rhode Island Red Food Tours will visit off-the-beaten path neighborhoods, learn about historic sites, folklore and colonial architecture, and of course enjoy food and drinks from at least six locally owned and operated  restaurants.  Tours run on Fridays and Saturdays at 12pm and covers about 1.8 miles.

A twenty year old dream has finally reached fruition as the replica of the Hermione, Marquis de Lafayette’s French warship that helped the USA be victorious over Great Britain, is sailing into Newport.  The ship will be sailing into Fort Adams on July 8th and there will be a two-day celebration, complete with a cast of French sailors, historic interpreters, spies, cavalry, chefs and barmen, to honor Hermione.

Activities start at the Fort both days at 10am and include: Military Drills, Military encampments, an outdoor tavern, more than 60 historic interpreters, the 2nd Regiment Light Dragoons Cavalry Unit with horses, the “Spymaster,” historian and author programs and music.  On the 9th, the Hermione, as well as the Oliver Hazard Perry, will be open to the public for free tours from 10am to 4pm.

There will also be three private, paid events occurring both nights.  These include: the Colonial Soiree, the Sailors and Soldiers Supper and Lunch with George Washington.  The Colonial Soiree will take place on Thursday, July 9th at 6pm, inside the Fort.  This event is to honor the Hermione on its first goodwill visit to the States.  The Hermione was built by the Republic of France as a way to honor the friendship between our countries.  50 uniformed historic interpreters will be present.  The dinner will end with a salute to the Hermione as she prepares to depart Newport.  For a more casual event to honor the Hermione, the Sailors and Soldiers Supper will be held on the grounds of Fort Adams.  This is a picnic style event where all can gather for a good meal and drinks.  Lunch with George Washington will take place on both July 8th and 9th.  He will be speaking about his life followed by a lunch at noon.

Be sure to check things out if you’re in town for the fun!

Newport is known for it’s sailing, so it’s no surprise that during the summer it’s home to a variety of competitive sailing races and regatta’s.  The Volvo Ocean Race kicked things off in May, and there’s no shortage of sailing competitions in the upcoming months.  The following are coming up at the end of June and into July: Newport Sailing Week, the 2015 Transatlantic Race and the Newport Regatta.

Newport Sailing Week, sponsored by Bacardi and EFG will take place from June 26th to July 5th, with the regatta taking place June 26th-28th.  This is the event’s fifth year and more than 60 boats from a variety of one-design classes will be competing.  This event attracts some of the best International and National Sailors.

The Transatlantic Race is back and over 40 boats will set out to cover the 2,800 nautical mile route from the Castle Hill Light House to The Lizard, the most southern point on Great Britain’s mainland.  The last race was held in 2011.  The Transatlantic Race is organized by the Royal Yacht Squadron, the New York Yacht Club, the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Storm Trysail Club.  The race has three separate starts, June 28th, July 1st and July 5th for the different sizes and classes of yachts participating.  The purpose of the staggered start dates is to have all the boats arrive in the same time frame.  Smaller boats will depart first, completing the race in 15-20 days, while faster and larger boats will start on the 5th with the goal to beat the record, set in 2011, of 6 days, 22 hours, 8 minutes and 2 seconds.

The Newport Regatta will be held at Fort Adams State Park July 10th through 12th.  This is one of the country’s premiere one-design regattas.

There’s plenty of ways to get your sailing fix this summer in Newport.  Be sure to check out some of the races and regattas during your stay.

Mark your calendars for the ribbon cutting at 11:30am on May 20th, when the International Tennis Hall of Fame is set to re-open and show the outcome of three years of planning and $3 million in renovations.

The Tennis Hall of Fame used it’s collection of over 25,000 artifacts, images, videos and publications to reinterpret the experience for visitors.  Their goal is to use interactive exhibits and narrative history in such a way that it will appeal to both hardcore tennis fans and “casual” visitors, leaving them educated and inspired.  Along with engaging storytelling, the museum will use art, fashion and historically relevant items that go beyond the court.  Some items on display include Rod Laver’s first Wimbledon trophy and Serena Williams’ golden shoes worn in her first French Open victory.International Tennis Hall of Fame

The Tennis Hall of Fame will be the  first sports museum in the United States to use holographic technology and Roger Federer was honored to be able to create a fun experience for fans.  The holographic theater will make visitors feel like they are in the room with Federer.  When walking into the theater, visitors will be welcomed and Federer will begin talking about his love of tennis, listing the top 10 reason he loves the sport.  He will also showcase some of his signature shots.

The new Tennis Hall of Fame museum will also feature a variety of interactive experiences such as a five foot touch table where visitors can “serve” tennis history questions back and forth, the “Call the Match” exhibit where visitors can record themselves acting as broadcasters, a large, rotating globe that highlights the impact of the sport and what is going on in tennis around the world, and a variety of interactive video walls that let visitors re-live tennis history.

Three Galleries, “The Birth of Tennis”, “The Popular Game,” and “The Open Era” will tell the history of tennis throughout the years.  Starting with “The Birth of Tennis,” from 1874 to 1918, this gallery explains how tennis evolved and includes a rare book from 1855, which is believed to be the earliest known writing about the sport. “The Popular Game,” from 1918 to 1968, gets into how the sport gained popularity and became intertwined with popular culture.  It focuses on early pro tours, the rise of celebrity athletes and the impact of technology.  Finally, “The Open Era,” from 1968 to the present, showcases the most significant amount of growth for the sport.  There are also two galleries dedicated to Hall of Famers and one changing exhibit.

The Tennis Hall of Fame delves into the history of tennis and is a resource for showing what the sport is like today and how it is always evolving.  Their new museum is an experience for visitors that will envelope them in the world of tennis with a variety of experiences.
